BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- UAB football standout Mike Jones will lace up the sneakers and return to the hardwood to compete for the Blazers' basketball team, men's basketball coach Mike Davis announced on Monday.
Jones, who practiced with the team on Monday, played on the Blazers' hoops squad during the 2008-09 campaign. In 13 appearances that season, the Nashville, Tenn. native connected on 7-of-13 shots from the floor and 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. He averaged 1.5 points and 0.3 rebounds in 4.0 minutes per contest.
"We are excited to have Mike back on our team," Davis said. "Mike was a great addition when he was on our team in 2009. He is very athletic and that is evident when you see him on the football field. Mike is not only a talented basketball player, but he is willing to do anything to better the team no matter what role we give him. I think he is going to be able to come out and help supply depth in our roation."
Jones was a standout hoops player for Hunters Lane HS where he led the team to the No. 5 final ranking in the state of Tennessee as a senior (2006). He averaged 14.0 points a game and was getting recruited out of high school to play basketball by several schools before ultimately choosing to play football at UAB.
This past year on the gridiron, Jones was voted honorable mention all-conference after stepping into a starting role in his final season. Jones finished the 2010 season with 38 receptions for 531 yards and a team-leading seven touchdowns.
