BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Will Barton had 17 points and eight rebounds as Memphis defeated UAB 76-73 in overtime on Saturday night.
"It was another one of those games," UAB head coach Mike Davis said. "It was a home loss. I thought Memphis did everything they needed to do. They played like seniors down the stretch of the game. Their young guys made plays against us when they needed to make plays. We kind of settled for just shooting 3-point shots. We did not need to shoot three-pointers. We needed to take the ball to the basket, and Memphis did a good job of that. I am very disappointed in our lack of focus down the stretch of the game."
Antonio Barton added 16 points for the Tigers (15-4, 4-1 Conference USA).
Cameron Moore led UAB with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Jamarr Sanders added 15 points for the Blazers, but missed all 10 of his 3-pointers. UAB finished 2 of 23 from 3-point range.
The Blazers led by as many as five points with just over five minutes remaining in regulation. However, the Tigers went on a 9-1 run to take a 62-59 edge with 3:15 remaining. The teams would eventually go into overtime tied at 68 apiece.
Memphis missed 5 of 6 free throws in the final 25 seconds of overtime, keeping UAB alive. The Blazers missed two 3-pointers in the final 6 seconds that could have tied the game.
The Tigers held UAB (13-5, 3-2) without a point in overtime until 37 seconds remained.
Memphis made only 14 of 27 free throws, but the Tigers shot 52.8 percent from the field (28 of 53).
"UAB is a good basketball team that's extremely well coached," Memphis head coach Josh Pastner said. "I felt the number one thing we had to do was take the 3 out of the game. We were fortunate they missed some shots. Jamarr Sanders is a big-time talent. (UAB) Coach (Mike) Davis runs a lot of good plays. They're hard to guard."
The Blazers will next be in action on Wednesday night when they welcome Marshall to Bartow Arena. The contest is set to tip at 7 p.m. CT.
