IRVING, Texas ---- Sam Serley earned her first career Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week award announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. It is the fourth consecutive weekly honor claimed by the UAB volleyball team in 2011 and the team’s first offensive award winner since Ivana Bozic on Nov. 3, 2008.
Serley hit a team and league-best .558 in two victories at UCF as the Blazers improved to 17-2 overall and stayed perfect in conference play at 7-0.
UAB received 3.78 kills and 1.67 blocks per set over the weekend from the Nashville, Tenn. product. Following a 14-kill effort on Friday night, Serley connected for 20 kills on 30 attacks with only one error in a five-set victory on Saturday. In the deciding stanza with the Knights, Serley stepped up, lacing six kills on seven attacks to keep UAB perfect in league play. Serley also recorded 15 total blocks over the two victories.
For the season, Serley is hitting .445 from her middle blocker position, tops in the league. She is also averaging 1.36 blocks per set, second-best in C-USA.
Serley joins teammates Heather Thomas, Kiriana Hirini and Kirsten Gallagher as league award winners this season. The three previous winners for the Blazers earned defensive accolades.
