TULSA, Okla. - UAB quarterback Bryan Ellis threw for 280 yards and two scores in his return to the lineup, while redshirt freshman Jamarcus Nelson had a pair of touchdown catches. However, it was not enough as the UAB football team dropped a 37-20 decision vs. Tulsa on Saturday.
Tulsa quarterback G.J. Kinne threw for 341 yards and three touchdowns as Tulsa overcame four turnovers to improve to 3-3 overall and 2-0 in league play.
UAB (0-6 overall, 0-3 Conference USA) scored 17 consecutive points to take a 17-10 lead in the second quarter, but Kinne threw two touchdown passes in the final 3:28 of the first half, helping Tulsa to a 24-20 lead at halftime.
Ellis and Nelson hooked up for first-half scoring strikes of 66 and 45 yards, the first two touchdown passes of the season for UAB. It was the only two catches on the night for Nelson, who finished with a career-best 111 yards receiving on his two receptions.
Jackie Williams added seven receptions for 77 yards, while Nick Adams had a pair of catches for 42 yards.
Tulsa running back Ja'Terian Douglas ran for 137 yards, including a 47-yard touchdown scamper in the third quarter that stretched the lead to 37-20. Clay Sears had nine catches for 105 yards and two touchdowns, and Willie Carter had eight for 87 and a score.
The Blazers will have a short week of preparation as they host the UCF Knights on Thursday night at Legion Field. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. and will be televised on CSS.
