BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB football team honed in on Houston’s game plan for just over an hour on Thursday morning as the Blazers prepare to take on the No. 14 Cougars this Saturday at Legion Field for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
As the team battles bumps and bruises normal for any football team, head coach Neil Callaway opted for a lighter workout over the past two days.
“We are dealing with some injuries,” Callaway said. “We need to get everyone well and ready to play.”
The Blazers are expected to face one of the toughest offenses in the country on Saturday as Houston averages 52.2 points per game and has compiled almost 5,000 yards in total offense.
“Obviously they have probably the best offense in the country,” Callway said. “Offensively, they have as many or maybe more weapons than I have ever seen on a college football team at receiver, quarterback and running back.
“You name it, they have it. I also think they are a much-improved defensive football team, which has kind of been their weak spot over the last couple of years. Their kicking game is very solid too.”
Although UAB faces the task of harnessing Houston’s offense, Callaway and the Blazers are excited about the opportunity to play the Cougars in the Homecoming game.
“It’s a game where we have to play our best, and we are excited about that opportunity,” Callaway said. “Defensively, I think we have to be patient. Offensively, we have to make every possession count. If we do that, then we will see what happens.”
The captains for Saturday’s contest will be offensive lineman Caleb Thomas, cornerback Marquis Coleman and tight end Danny Volk on special teams.
CBS Sports Network will televise the game with Dave Ryan (play-by-play), Rich Rodriguez (color) and Krista Blunk (sidelines) on the call.
The Blazer IMG Sports Network radio broadcast will air locally on WUHT-FM 107.7 in Birmingham. David Crane and John Whitcomb have the call with Sam Miller on the sidelines. The pregame show begins 90 minutes before kickoff.
