BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- Senior Heather Thomas was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. It marks the second time this season and of her career that Thomas has earned the weekly recognition.
Thomas led UAB to a pair of victories against the UTEP Miners by averaging 8.00 digs per set for the weekend. In the three-game sweep on Saturday, Thomas corralled 28 digs and became just the fifth player in Conference USA history to surpass the 2,000-dig milestone. She now has 2,040 for her career.
In the second contest with the Miners in as many days, Thomas recorded 28 digs yet again, tying a season-high and marking the fourth time this season she has posted that dig total.
Thomas and her teammates held UTEP to a .133 hitting percentage for the weekend, and with the two victories the Blazers have now won 20 matches in 2011.
For the season, UAB as a team has claimed five weekly honors, four on the defensive side.
