BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- UAB freshman kicker Ty Long has been named a 2011 Freshman All-American by Phil Steele's College Football Preview.
The magazine releases Preseason, Midseason and Postseason All-America teams.
Long was tabbed to its third-team Freshman All-America squad, the magazine announced this week.
The product of Roswell, Ga. had an outstanding first season for the Blazers as he connected on 16-of-19 field goals. Long, who had a pair of game-winning field goals (vs. UCF and Southern Miss) in 2011, ranked No. 2 among Conference USA kickers in field goal percentage at 84.2 and was third in field goals made per game (1.33).
Long's 72 points scored this past season ranked third in the country among freshman kickers overall and was the second-highest mark among true freshmen.
Long's 16 field goals were the most of any true freshman kicker in the country in 2011 and second-highest among all freshmen (Oklahoma redshirt frosh Mike Hunnicutt had 20 FGs this season).
Long's 1.33 field goal goals per game rank No. 24 in the NCAA statistics among all kickers.
Long was recently named to the C-USA All-Freshman Team and picked up a league Special Teams Player-of-the-Week honor following his performance in the Blazers' win over UCF. Against the Knights, he converted both of his field goal attempts, including his 40-yard game-winner with :21 remaining.
