MIAMI, Fla. - The UAB volleyball team (13-8, 2-3 C-USA) fell to FIU (8-9, 2-3 C-USA) in straight-sets, 3-0, on Friday night. It was just the third time this season the Blazers have been swept.
Junior Bethanie Thomas was the lone Blazers with double-digit kills, landing 11 against the Panthers. Fellow junior Kiriana Hirini added eight and senior Ally Slaughter and junior Sara Rishell each had seven.
Grabbing her ninth double-double of the season was senior Becca Howard, who dished out 35 assists and tallied 14 digs. Senior Rachel Fairbanks led the team with 21 digs in the match.
FIU out-hit UAB .244 to .127 and grabbed 11 blocks on the Blazers' attack. In the first set, both teams remained close but the Panthers edged out the win 25-23. The Blazers were not able to get momentum going in the second set, as FIU took control and won 25-15 to lead 2-0 at the break.
The third set proved to be a battle to the end, as there were 15 ties and four lead changes. The teams were forced to extra points, but UAB couldn't pull out the win as the Panthers took the match with a 26-24 win in set three.
The Blazers will remain in the state of Florida, as they travel down the road to Boca Raton to face Florida Atlantic on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 11 a.m. CT.
