UAB vs. Jackson State Quick Hits
» UAB meets Jackson State for the seventh time in school history on Sunday. The Blazers lead the all-time series against JSU, 6-0, with the last meeting coming on Dec. 29, 2001 -- an 88-68 UAB victory.
» The Blazers are coming off an overtime loss to USF on Thursday. In a game that featured 14 ties and 16 lead changes, UAB took the Bulls to overtime and hit just 28-of-47 (59.6 percent) from the free-throw line for the game.
» Against USF on Thursday, highly-touted freshman William Lee saw his first action as a Blazer. Lee, a former high school standout at Dallas (Ala.) County High School, was the 2013-14 Gatorade Alabama Player of the Year and the 2014 Alabama Sports Writers Association's Mr. Basketball. Lee played 12 minutes against the Bulls on Thursday night.
» UAB freshman point guard Nick Norton has recorded eight assists in back-to-back games. The Bloomington, Ill., native currently leads Conference USA in assists, averaging seven assists per game this season.
» Each UAB player will wear different colored shoes -- a green shoe and a white shoe -- during every game this season. UAB's shoe combination is part of the Blazers Committed To A Cure initiative, which was created by coach Jerod Haase and his staff to raise awareness for pediatric cancer. The Blazers are encouraging fans to make donations to the Alabama Center For Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children's of Alabama by visiting www.childrensal.org.
UAB vs. Jackson State Notes
Mehinti Starts Strong For The Blazers
» Sophomore forward Tosin Mehinti, who played in each of UAB's 31 games last season, put together perhaps the two best performances of his young UAB career in back-to-back games to begin the 2014-15 season. Mehinti scored career highs in each contest with 15 points against ULM followed by 19 vs. Young Harris. He added 10 rebounds against the Warhawks to give him the first double-double of his career.
Newcomers Already Making Impact
» Including the exhibition game against UNC Pembroke, Blazer newcomers have accounted for 49 percent of the Blazers' scoring, amassing 148 of UAB's 301 total points this season. Redshirt junior Robert Brown is coming off a 14-point performance against USF, while fellow newcomer Nick Norton leads Conference USA in assists with 7.0 per game and Hakeem Baxter is averaging 8.0 points per game through three games.
19-Game Non-Conference Home Win Streak Snapped
» UAB's season-opening 74-65 loss to ULM represented the first loss at home against a non-conference opponent for the Blazers under head coach Jerod Haase. The loss also snapped a 19-game non-conference home win streak that dated back to the 2011-12 season.
Norton Finding Rhythm At Point Guard Spot
» Freshman point guard Nick Norton has had a strong start to his Blazer career through the first three regular season games. The Bloomington, Illinois native had an 11-point, 8 assist effort against Young Harris last Monday. Norton was 4-for-6 from the field, including a 3-for-4 mark from 3-point range, against the Mountain Lions and has totaled 21 assists through the first three games of the year.
Washington Named Preseason All-Conference USA
» UAB senior forward C.J. Washington was named to the 2014-15 Preseason All-Conference USA Team, as voted on by the league's head coaches. Washington was one of just 10 players from the conference to earn the honor. A native of Augusta, Ga., Washington had an impressive season with the Blazers during the 2013-14 campaign. The 6-foot-8 forward topped the 20-point mark in scoring six times, including a season-high 28-point output against Temple in the Charleston Classic that earned him Conference USA Player of the Week honors. Washington was second on the team in scoring with 13.0 points per game to go along with 6.9 rebounds per contest.
Seven Years Combined Experience On UAB's Roster
» With 10 players who are either freshmen or sophomores on UAB's roster, the Blazers have one of the youngest teams in college basketball. There is a combined seven years of NCAA Division 1 basketball experience on UAB's roster and only four years of experience at UAB combined. Senior forward C.J. Washington and redshirt junior guard Robert Brown are the veterans on the team with Brown's two years of experience at Virginia Tech and Washington's one year at UAB last season.
