BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- With one game left on the 2014 regular season schedule and needing one more win to become bowl eligible, UAB continued its preparations for Saturday's matchup at Southern Miss.
"We had a good day," said head coach Bill Clark. "It was good to be back in full pads, and the team responded well. They know that this is a big game for both sides."
The Golden Eagles come into the weekend with the 10th-ranked rushing defense in Conference USA, allowing just more than 202 yards per game on the ground, and the 11th-ranked pass defense, having surrendered more than 2,600 yards through the air in C-USA.
"I think they know what our strength is and had some guys that were banged up that are coming back, so I imagine that they will be ready," Clark said. "Both sides look at the other side and think `okay this is something that we can attack' and are also looking to fix that."
The Blazers' strength has been on the ground with sophomore running back Jordan Howard, who has put together one of the greatest seasons rushing the ball in UAB history. Howard has rushed for 1,325 yards and 12 touchdowns, ranking 13th and 17th in the NCAA, respectively. Howard's effort on the ground this season ranks No. 1 in the Blazer record book for yards by a running back and No. 2 all-time in rushing touchdowns.
Saturday's game will be televised on the American Sports Network and can be seen locally in Birmingham on WABM My68. Fans may also listen on the Blazer IMG Sports Network with David Crane (play-by-play), Steve Irvine (analyst) and Sam Miller (sideline reporter) on the call.
