SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Seven different players recorded kills as the UAB volleyball team fell to UTSA, 3-0, on the road in Conference USA play on Friday night.
UAB (6-22, 3-10 C-USA) out-hit UTSA (17-7, 13-0) in the second and third sets, but the Roadrunners finished with 42 kills to the Blazers' 30 on the night. UTSA also finished with 10.0 blocks to slow the Blazer hitters.
Despite falling to UTSA, 25-12, in the first set, the Blazers bounced back to challenge the Roadrunners in the final two sets. UAB found itself with a 7-3 lead early in the second after an ace by sophomore Gabby Deshotel. The second set saw 15 ties and six lead changes.
The Blazers were up 16-14, but a 3-0 run would swing the advantage back into the Roadrunners' favor, 17-16. The set was again tied at 17-17 when UTSA began another run and would go on to win the set, 25-22, to take a 2-0 lead into the break.
The third set was the strongest for UAB, who hit .273 and recorded 15 kills. The Blazers had another early lead until a UTSA run would put the Roadrunners up 6-4. UAB and UTSA continued to tie the set up with 13 ties and five lead changes in the third.
It remained close until the final points as the teams traded points down the stretch until it was tied 23-23. UTSA was able to jump to the advantage with a kill by Dajana Boskovic, then an error for the Blazers would secure the 25-23 win for UTSA.
Sophomore Gabby Deshotel led UAB with 10 kills, with seniors Sara Rishell and Kiriana Hirini each contributing six. Sophomore Amber Treace dished out 24 assists and added three kills on the night.
Defensively, libero Emma Schroer matched her career-high in digs for the third time this season with 17. She led all players in that category. Rishell picked up three blocks to lead the Blazers and Treace contributed two.
UAB will conclude C-USA road play at Middle Tennessee on Sunday. The Blazers and Blue Raiders are set to meet at 1 p.m. CT.
