UAB Volleyball Falls Short to Southern Miss, 3-1

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB volleyball team battled Southern Miss in a tight match, but the Golden Eagles squeaked out a 3-1 victory Sunday in Bartow Arena.
The Golden Eagles (16-5, 3-1 C-USA) opened the first set with a point off
The Golden Eagles ended the set with three-straight points to win, 25-19.
UAB set the tone in set two with a kill from junior Gabby Deshotel to lead, 1-0. Southern Miss kept the match close, not allowing UAB to extend its lead by more than three until the Blazers fired off a 4-0 run to win the set,
Southern Miss scored five-straight points to open the third set, but UAB tallied an 11-6 run to tie the set, 11-all. Southern Miss recorded a run to lead 21-17, but the Blazers shot off three-straight points and fought off two set points before the Golden Eagles claimed the match, 25-20.
The Golden Eagles led by as much as five in the final set before UAB used two separate runs to cut into the lead, 22-19. The Green and Gold fought off three match points before Southern Miss capped a 25-22 set victory to win the match, 3-1.
In total, the match saw 24 ties and 10 lead changes.
Deshotel led the Blazers with her seventh double-double of the season. The outside hitter recorded 15 kills for a .138 clip while adding 11 digs to the UAB defense. The junior totaled 15.5 points for the Blazers.
Freshman Jillian Tinglin tied her career-high of 13 kills in the match while attacking at a .281 percentage. Junior Caitlin Conner dished out 27 assists and six digs for the Blazers while junior Emma Schroer led the defense with 21 total digs.
Stephany Purdue led Southern Miss with 17 total kills for a .178 clip while tallying three blocks for a total of 23 points.
The Golden Eagles attacked at a team percentage of .183 with 55 kills compared to UAB's 40 kills at a team attacking percentage of .135.
The Blazers will return to the court on Friday, October 9 as UAB travels to Marshall for a conference battle. First serve is set for 11:30 a.m. CT.
