UTEP Edges Out UAB Volleyball, 3-1

EL PASO, Texas -- The UAB volleyball team battled from behind to win the third set, but UTEP topped the Blazers, 3-1, Friday night at Memorial Gym.
UAB (9-20, 1-13 C-USA) and the Miners (8-20, 2-11 C-USA) were even through the opening points of the first set with four ties before the Blazers pulled away, 10-7.

The UTEP offense responded with back-to-back kills to claim the first set, 25-27.
Set two featured two ties in the early stages before UTEP gained a 10-9 lead off a Blazer attack error. The Miners never relinquished the lead, outscoring UAB, 15-7, to claim the second set, 25-16.
Facing a 2-0 deficit, the Blazers answered in the third set. UAB battled UTEP to the wire until junior Gabby Deshotel capped the 26-24 victory with a kill.
The Miners denied a Blazer comeback, topping UAB in the fourth set, 25-16, to win the match, 3-1.
Deshotel topped the Blazers' offense with 20 kills, the eighth match of the season the outside hitter has recorded 20 or more kills. The junior added six digs and two blocks to the UAB attack.
Sophomore Haley Jared continued her hot streak, recording 14 kills while attacking at a .244 clip. Jared chipped in nine digs.
Junior Amber Treace led the Green and Gold to a .169 clip with 48 helpers in the match.
Emma Schroer continued her impressive junior campaign with 22 digs, leading the UAB defense. With 464 digs, the libero now ranks 10th in program history for the most digs in a single season.
Talia Jones led the Miners with 18 kills as the Miners totaled 62 kills, just edging out the Blazers' team total of 55.
UAB returns to action Sunday as the Blazers face UTSA for the second time this season. First serve is set for 1 p.m. CT.
