BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Four top-five finishes, two personal bests and a freshman school record highlighted competition for the UAB Track and Field team Friday at the Birmingham-Southern Icebreaker from the Birmingham CrossPlex.
In field events, freshman Zieandrea Bridges turned in an eighth place showing and set a freshman school record in the shot put with a distance of 39-01.25.
“It’s exciting to know that Zreandrea already set a freshman record in an event that she is really still learning,” UAB head coach Kurt Thomas said.
Fellow freshman Aisha Nelson recorded a height of 5-05.00 in the high jump on her way to a 10th place finish.
Distance runner Lucy Crookes placed second in the mile run but was the top collegiate finisher with a personal-best time of 4:54.26.
Sophomore Shelbi White raced to a second place finish in the 60-meter dash following a personal-best mark of 7.53.
“I thought there were a lot of positives today,” Thomas added. The goal was to see where we stand in our fitness, speed and technique after fall training. We still have a lot to work on, but it was important to see our team compete in a traditional meet setting.”
UAB returns to action Jan. 15 when the Blazers host the UAB Blazer Invitational from the Birmingham CrossPlex.
