Blazers Top Texas Southern in Lamar Invitational Finale

BEAUMONT, Texas - After dropping the opening set, the UAB volleyball team (2-1) battled back to force a decisive set five before topping Texas Southern, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at McDonald Gym.
UAB out blocked the Tigers (0-3) 14.5 to 10 with five different Blazers recording blocks in the match. Senior Sydney Nelson paced the way with three solo blocks and four block assists.
The Blazers were down early after falling in the first set, 25-14, but rebounded to win set two (25-20) and a must-win set four (25-17) to force set five. The Blazers topped TSU in the final set by a 15-11 score.
Junior Gabby Deshotel closed out the tournament with another strong outing recording a match-high 18 kills, while hitting a clip of .216. Deshotel also finished with seven block assists, four digs, two aces and one assist. Junior Amy Hunter added 15 kills to the UAB offense and hit a team-best .414 clip.
Junior Amy Treace ran the offense at the setter position, picking up 22 assists.
The UAB defense was led by libero Emma Schroer's 26 digs. Sophomore Haley Jared added 10 digs to the Blazers' total.
Texas Southern edged the Green and Gold with a .149 hitting percentage, but the Blazers forced 26 errors on the Tigers. Robyn Shannon, who tallied 13 kills, led TSU.
The Blazers return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 1 when UAB travels to Troy to face the Trojans. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. CT.
