UAB Tops Middle Tennessee on the Road

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The UAB volleyball team sought revenge on Middle Tennessee and downed the Blue Raiders in four sets, 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 25-19, 25-14), at Alumni Memorial Gym on Sunday afternoon.
Erika Zembyla tied Middle Tennessee’s Regan Coughlin for a match-high 15 kills and recorded a team-high .452 attack percentage. Amber Treace paced the offense with 42 assists and posted a .286 hitting percentage.
Kenley Adams and Victoria Young had a good day offensively and defensively. Both Blazers tallied 11 kills and had three blocks each. Adams posted a .435 attack percentage and Young had a .450 mark.
Petra Silic led the defensive effort for the Blazers with six total blocks. The 6’4 junior also contributed seven kills for a .385 hitting percentage. Emily Martinez continues to be solid on the back line as she recorded a team-high 12 digs.
Middle Tennessee jumped to an early 8-2 lead in the first set but the Blazers were not deterred and battled the rest of the set until the two teams were tied 20-20, and UAB went on to secure the 25-23 come-from-behind win.
The Blue Raiders held the lead the majority of the second set as they clinched a 25-22 victory. The third set saw 10 ties and six lead changes and the score was tied as late as 14-14 before the Blazers took the lead and kept it, resulting in a 25-19 win.
The Blazers dominated the final set of the match to clinch their third Conference USA win of the season. Middle Tennessee kept the score close towards the beginning of the set but UAB proved to be too strong and cruised to an impressive 25-14 victory.
Coughlin recorded 15 kills and posted a .324 attack percentage to lead the Blue Raiders’ offense. Makila York was second on the team with 10 kills and Vonnie Covington posted a team-high .400 hitting percentage.
The Blazers return home this weekend as they play host to UTSA on Friday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. and Western Kentucky on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 12 p.m.
