BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's track & field team began its 2016-17 indoor season at the Birmingham-Southern College Icebreaker on Friday inside the Birmingham Crossplex. The meet was highlighted for the Blazers by six top five finishes including a first-place performance by junior Shelbi White in the 60 Meter Dash.
"We had a lot of good things happen today," said UAB head coach Kurt Thomas. "We also had a lot of learning curves. It was great to see Keila Robertson jump well in the triple jump and Aisha Nelson open with a very good high jump. Sarah Livett, Rebecca Evans and Emily Drouin ran a good, controlled mile race. Shelbi White sprinted the way she is capable of in the 60 meter and came away as the overall event winner. All of those performances set them up well for the rest of the indoor season. We had some freshman compete in their first college meet and came away with some good learning experiences and some things to build off of. This team is hard working and we will need that to keep getting better as the season goes on."
White posted the fourth-fastest time in the preliminaries finishing in 7.61 seconds. She then posted a time of 7.54 seconds in the final to capture first. It was only a hundredth of a second away from her personal-best.
Two Blazers scored in the One Mile Run. Senior Sarah Livett (5:06.59) and junior Rebecca Evans (5:10.83) finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Junior Emily Drouin nearly scored for UAB, placing seventh with a time of 5:21.47. That mark was three tenths of a second from the sixth-place time.
Sophomore Aisha Nelson placed second in the High Jump. She tied her personal-best by clearing 5'7" (1.70 meters) on her second attempt at that height.
Freshman Keila Robertson added a strong performance in the Triple Jump. She placed third with her best attempt coming in at 37'11.5" (11.57 meters).
The Blazers will now be off for the next month and a half before hosting two invitationals at the Crossplex. The first is the UAB Blazer Invitational on Friday, January 13, 2017 and the next is the UAB Vulcan Invite the following day, Saturday, January 14, 2017.
