TEXARKANA, Ark. - After one round of play, the UAB men's golf team leads at the 2016 Conference USA Men's Golf Championship by one stroke over Louisiana Tech at the Texarkana Country Club.
Sophomore Taylor Eyster holds a five-stroke lead over the rest of the field after shooting 8-under on the opening day. His 64 tied for the second-best 18-hole total in C-USA Championship history and the best showing since the league's inaugural championship in 1996. He carded one eagle, a round-best seven birdies and nine pars.
"Taylor played one of the best rounds in program history," head coach Alan Murray said. "The course is extremely tricky, and the greens are contoured and firm. Scoring is difficult. It was a hugely impressive round, and I am really proud of Taylor's efforts."
The Blazers' John Hayden and Lee Hodges both rank among the field's top 20, as well. Hayden is tied for 10th place at even par and Hodges is tied for 16th a one-over.
"John Hayden had an excellent 72 and contributed greatly to the team's lead today," Murray said. "With Hodges at one-over, and seniors Martin Rohwer and Will Cannon with a 76 and 78, it puts us in a good position going into the second round. The guys will get some work done this afternoon on the things we can do better, but it was a solid day for the Blazers."
Old Dominion freshman Nick Rencis and Marshall junior Clark Robinson are currently tied for second, individually, following a 3-under 69, while five players carded a 2-under 70 to place them in a tie for fourth.
