UAB Volleyball Downs Troy in Five Sets

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB volleyball team defeated Troy 3-2 (25-21, 19-25, 21-25, 25-20, 15-12) at Bartow Arena on Tuesday night. The Blazers now lead the all-time series against the Trojans 17-2.
Petra Silic and Haley Jared led the UAB offensive attack with 17 kills each and Silic posted a match-high .519 hitting percentage. UAB (7-5) held Troy to a .100 attack percentage in the final set compared to its own .273 attack percentage.
Victoria Young finished with a match-high seven blocks for the Blazers and tallied eight kills on the night. Emily Martinez, Amber Treace and Sydney Hinds also helped in the defensive effort with all three posting more than 12 digs.
UAB came into the match hot and took the early lead with a 25-21 win. The Trojans tied the match up with a 25-19 win in the second set. Troy picked up where they left off in the second set and won the third set 25-21.
The Blazers’ defense stepped up in the fourth set, holding Troy to a .194 attack percentage with 13 kills and six errors on their way to a 25-20 win. UAB entered the fifth set with the momentum on their side and came away with the 15-12 victory.
Sara Landis led Troy with a match-high 19 kills and posted a .359 attack percentage on 39 attempts.
UAB returns to action Thursday night to kick off the Fight Like Hal Memorial Invitational against UL Lafayette at 7 p.m. Memphis and UT Martin will also join the Blazers and Ragin’ Cajuns for the four-team event.
