UAB Sweeps in First Day of Jax State Invitational

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. -- The UAB volleyball team swept Mississippi Valley State and Jackson State in three straight sets on the first day of the Jax State Invitational at Pete Matthews Coliseum in Jacksonville, Ala.
UAB 3, MVSU 0
The Blazers (5-4) showed their strength recording 42 kills for an impressive .423 hitting percentage and six team blocks in the 3-0 sweep over Mississippi Valley State (25-18, 25-10, 25-23).
The Blazers held the Delta Devils (1-5) to 20 kills, three team blocks and a .040 attack percentage, meanwhile recorded 40 kills and committed just nine errors themselves.
Victoria Young had a match-high 10 kills and hit .714 for the Blazers while Kenley Adams, Petra Silic and Haley Jared all contributed seven kills. UAB hit a season-high .423 as a team with Amber Treace, Silic and Young all hitting over .700 individually.
The first set was tight with UAB leading 10-8, but from there the Blazers continued to roll and took the first set 25-18. The Blazers dominated the second set as they cruised to a 25-10 win. The 13 kills and eight blocks they recorded clinched the victory.
The third set was the closest of the match with nine ties all the way to a 21-21 score, but UAB broke the tie with a Mississippi Valley State service error and took control to post a 25-23 win to take the match.

UAB picked up where it left off in the first match and blanked Jackson State (0-9) in three straight sets (25-10, 25-20, 25-19) to go undefeated on the day.
Silic led the Blazers with 11 kills for a .400 hitting percentage and tied for first on the squad with four total blocks along with Young. As a team, the Blazers hit .253 while holding Jackson State to a .021 mark.
The Blazers hit .292 in the first set with 10 kills and just three errors and took a one-set lead with a score of 25-10. Jackson State responded in the second set and jumped to an early 10-4 lead before UAB rallied back and tied the score at 14. It was UAB's set from there on out as they didn't give the lead up again and recorded the 25-20 win.
Jackson State came into the third set hot and took an early 7-3 lead before the Blazers rallied back and tied the game 13-13. UAB went on to hold Jackson State to a .029 attack percentage on its way to a 25-19 win.
The Blazers take the court again on Saturday against New Orleans at 9 a.m. and Jacksonville State at 4:30 p.m. to round out the Jax State Invitational.
