No. 19 UAB Bowling Opens 2017-18 Season

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The No. 19 UAB Bowling team will look to backup lofty preseason expectations as the Blazers open their 2017-18 season at the AllState Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational Oct. 20-22.
"We are thrilled to have the AllState Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational as our first event this season," head coach Michelle Crews said. "Tulane runs a fantastic tournament with a strong field of competition and a challenging oil pattern. This tournament will be a great test to see where we currently stand as a team and what we need to work on heading into the next few weeks of tournaments."
UAB returns six bowlers from a season ago that finished No. 20 in the final National Tenpin Coaches Association polls. The Blazers tallied second place finishes at the FAMU Rattler Invitational and the Jackson State Sonic Boom.
Competing this weekend is Rachael Berg, Rachel Strogin, Sierra Lewis, Caitlin Cunningham, Taylor Russell, Annie Hurley, Samantha Johnson, Elise London and Morgan Mullinax.
The tournament format features five Baker game matches on Friday, five Team games on Saturday with three best of seven Baker matches concluding the tournament on Sunday.
No. 5 Sam Houston State highlights a competitive field that also includes No. 6 Stephen F. Austin, No. 17 Tulane, No. 20 Prairie View A&M, No. 25 Duquesne, Alabama A&M, Bethune Cookman, Florida A&M, Jackson State, Lincoln Memorial, LA Tech, Southern, Texas Southern and Valparaiso.
"I feel this is the most prepared we have ever been heading into our first event and I could not be more excited," Crews said.
