Blazers Cruise Past Jacksonville in Season Opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Chris Cokley scored a career-high 26 points to go along with 13 rebounds and five assists to lead UAB to a 96-67 victory over Jacksonville Friday evening at Bartow Arena.
Cokley surpassed his previous best of 25 points he tallied two seasons ago against Auburn and Seattle. The Savannah, Ga., native also made 10 of his 13 shots to help the Blazers shoot 61.4 percent from the field.
Freshman Zack Bryant added 18 points and eight assists and William Lee finished with 12 points, five rebounds and two blocked shots. Jalen Perry chipped in with 11 points off the bench.
J.D. Notae led Jacksonville with 18 points and Devin Harris finished with 16 points and a team-high five assists.
Tanner Rubio pulled Jacksonville within five points midway through the first half when his jumper left the Dolphins trailing 21-16. UAB answered with 14-2 run over the next six minutes to build a 35-18 lead with five minutes before halftime.
"This was a good first game for us and I was pleased with the outcome," UAB head coach Robert Ehsan said. "I thought be played really good in stretches and I thought we shared the basketball exceptionally well tonight."
Cokley scored the final basket of the first half to give the Blazers a 43-27 edge at intermission.
UAB scored the first four points of the second half and upped its lead to 20 and led by at least 14 for the rest of the game. Jacksonville pulled within 18 points on a three-pointer by Corey Romich with just over eight minutes to play, but UAB held the Dolphins to four field goals for the rest of the game and led by as many as 29 points.
UAB returns to the hardwood Monday at 7 p.m. when the Blazers welcome Chattanooga to Bartow Arena.
