Blazers Fall to Marshall

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. β The UAB volleyball team fell to Marshall in straight sets (25-18, 25-21, 25-22) Saturday at the Cam Henderson Center.

With the loss, UAB falls to 11-19 overall and 4-10 in Conference USA. The match had added implications as a win for either team would send them to the conference tournament. As a result of the Marshall win, it will advance to the conference tournament as the No. 8 seed.

UAB finishes the season ninth in the conference.

Senior Petra Silic led the Green and Gold on Saturday with 10 kills and four blocks. With her 10thΒ kill of the match, SilicΒ reached 1,000 kills in her NCAA career.Β Β Redshirt freshman Emma Mitchell set a new career high in kills with eight against the Thundering Herd. Freshman setter Shelby Holderfield recorded 29 assists and a kill for the Blazers and brings her total number of assists for the season up to 693.

The Blazers had been led all season by its seniors, Gabby Deshotel, Haley Jared, Zahria Richard, Silic and Erika Zembyla. Those five accounted for 1,128 kills, 85 service aces, 654 digs and 250 blocks during the 2017 season.

Deshotel finishes her UAB career 1,228 career kills, Jared with 677 kills, Richard will end with 211. SilicΒ and ZembylaΒ who transferred to UAB and only spent two years in Birmingham,Β will close out their Blazer volleyball careers with 420 kills andΒ 573 kills respectively.

"Those five have provided a lot of offense for us over the last several years and we will miss their competitiveness and desire to win," head coach Kerry Messersmith said. "They have brought a lot to our program both on and off the court and to have been their coach has been a true honor and a privilege."

UAB started the match strong as it took a 4-0 lead to open the first set. However, Marshall clawed its way back and the two teams traded points until the Thundering Herd took a 16-11 lead.

UAB closed to within two points in the first set, but Marshall closed on a 6-1 run to win the 25-19.

The second set was a game of runs as Marshall had runs of five and six points. UAB had a run of five straight points, but the Marshall defense did not let the Blazers offense find a rhythm as it won the set 25-21.

Marshall (11-18, 6-8) started the third set strong and while the Blazers kept it close throughout, they could not take the lead and fell 25-22 to secure the Marshall win.

Jac'cara Walker and Madison Hill each tallied double-digit kills of 11 and 10, respectively, for the Thundering Herd. Marshall held UAB without a service ace as it scored five aces of its own.
