BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Join the UAB men's basketball team at Bartow Arena on Thursday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Light the Night Walk.
Registration opens at 4:30 p.m. and will be followed by a pre-walk ceremony at 7:15 p.m. The walk begins at 7:30 p.m. from Railroad Park and concludes with a fireworks celebration at 8 p.m. The Blazers will make the trek to Railroad Park on foot from Bartow Arena and everyone is encouraged to join.
"Having the team step up and put themselves out there for this cause is amazing," Corporate Walk Chair and Executive Committee member Adam Cohen said. "Personally knowing these young men, and knowing how they are not just great athletes but wonderful people, should make all fans of UAB Basketball proud. Having the opportunity to walk with these young men is a privilege all fans should take advantage of."
Birmingham's Light the Night Walk is an evening filled with inspiration. During this quarter-mile leisurely walk, walkers carry illuminated lanterns, symbolizing bringing light to the darkness of cancer. Each walker will receive an illuminated lantern for supporting the cause. Participants are encouraged to become a Champion for Cures by raising $100 or more. Champions for Cures will receive dinner and a Light the Night t-shirt at the walk.
"The Light the Night walk is one of the most memorable evening you will ever have," Cohen added. "It is a short walk filled with people remembering loved ones lost and supporting love ones who are fighting blood cancer. It is a quarter of a mile journey with lanterns held high. It is a night of hope, awareness and the need for continued support for a cure.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is making cures happen by providing patient support services, advocating for lifesaving treatments and pioneering the most promising cancer research anywhere. Each year friends, families and co-workers form teams to raise money in support of the mission.
"Our team is thrilled to participate in such an important and inspiring event," UAB head coach Robert Ehsan said. "Part of our mission as a program is to help our community in any way that we can, and assisting in the fight against cancer is something we feel strongly about."
