BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Jalen Perry scored 15 points and grabbed a career-high seven rebounds to lead UAB to a 74-57 victory over Mississippi Valley State Saturday afternoon at Bartow Arena.
Nick Norton added 14 points and hit four 3-pointers to help UAB shoot at least 40.0 percent from three-point range for the third consecutive game. Nate Darling chipped in with 12 points and Lewis Sullivan finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Dante Scott led Mississippi Valley State with 17 points and seven rebounds and Gemaal Davis added 10 points and six rebounds off the bench.
Scott put the Delta Devils ahead 13-11 with a three-pointer midway through the first half. That's when UAB answered with a 14-0 rub over the next eight minutes to build 25-13 advantage.
UAB (9-4) would lead by as many as 20 points twice in the final two minutes of the half, but a three-pointer by Scott on Mississippi Valley State's final possession left the Blazers ahead 40-23 at halftime.
The Blazers led by double digits for the first 13 minutes of the second half until Scott pulled the Delta Devils within nine points with a jumper just outside the free throw line. UAB responded with a layup by Zack Bryant and an old fashioned three-point play from Makhtar Gueye to push the lead back to 14 and ignite a 13-5 run to close the game.
Darling led UAB with five assists as the Blazers reached 20 helpers for the third time this season. Senior William Lee recorded five of UAB's nine blocked shots and is now just 15 shy of becoming the school's all-time leader.
UAB returns to action Saturday, Dec. 30 at 4 p.m. when the Blazers open Conference USA play by hosting defending league champion Middle Tennessee at Bartow Arena.
