BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB baseball team was one pitch away from potentially winning the game on Sunday afternoon, but the Blazers never saw that pitch. With the bases loaded, two outs, and a 2-2 count with Price Visintainer at the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning, the game was called due to pouring rain. Charlotte was given the win in the shortened affair to move to 27-17 and 14-7 in Conference USA while the Green & Gold fell to 19-24 this year and 7-14 in conference.
The 49ers scored an unearned run in the top of the second inning due to a pair of errors allowing the first two batters to reach base and then a wild pitch put both runners in scoring position. A groundout was enough at that point to score the runner from third to take a 1-0 lead.
Charlotte added runs in the fourth and fifth frames. Only one of those runs was earned as another error in the fifth led to a run scored and made it 3-0.
The Blazers took the advantage in hits in the bottom of the sixth inning with a leadoff double by Colton Schultz. That was followed by a Brewer Hicklen walk, Carter Pharis strikeout, and Pierce Ressmeyer was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Zack Davis popped up in a pinch-hitting opportunity which brought Visintainer to the plate. The junior entered the at-bat 1-for-2 on the day and pushed the count to 2-2 but the game was put into delay due to the inclement weather. It would be called officially over two hours later.
UAB had five hits to the 49ers four but the Blazers added four errors on the day while their opponent had none.
Carson Jones was charged for the loss in his second career start to move to 2-3. The redshirt junior threw four-plus inning with three hits allowed, three runs, one earned, one walk, and three strikeouts.
Garrett Whitlock was strong in relief allowing just a single baserunner (hit) over two innings. The sophomore righty needed just 23 pitches and racked up two K's.
Matt Brooks started for Charlotte and got the win. He improves to 6-3, tossing five innings, no runs, one walk, and adding one strikeout.
Schultz was 2-for-3 at the plate with the double, his third of the series. He finished the weekend with six hits.
The Blazers play a pair of midweek games this week. First, they travel crosstown to face local rival Samford on Tuesday, May 2 at 6:00 p.m. before playing Alabama State in a makeup game the following day at Young Memorial Field slated for 6:30 p.m.
