BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Despite controlling possession for most of the game, the UAB men's soccer team battled UNC Greensboro to a double overtime 0-0 tie in its season opener Friday night at BBVA Compass Field.
"I thought the performance was excellent, it was even better than what we played in our last exhibition game," head coach Mike Getman said. "Yes we're disappointed that we didn't win the game but we controlled how it was played. From the opening whistle to the last we were the ones dictating how the game. Against a really good team that is athletic and skillful, I thought it was a great performance we just couldn't get the goal we needed to win the match."
UAB's best shot attempt in overtime came off the foot of sophomore Trey Nelson. Nelson battled into the box but missed the shot wide left.
The Blazers best chance of the night came in the 66th minute when redshirt sophomore Philip Makinde found himself alone with an empty net but his chip shot sailed just high.
UAB outshot UNC Greensboro 17-15 with both keepers coming up with timely saves late in the match.
"I give UNC Greensboro's goalkeeper credit, he made three or four superb saves," Getman said.
Five Blazers – James Teal, Gael Mabiala, Alexandre Ricourt, Aidan O'Hara and Joseph Buete – made their debut for the Green and Gold with the first four respectively earning the starting nod.
O'Hara led the Blazers on offense rattling off five shots with two on target. Defensively, Teal kept UAB in the game picking up five saves.
"We talk about all of the time with our guys that we're concerned with performance and getting better everyday. If you do those two things the results will come. I was more focused on how we played than what the final result was and I was pleased with the performance," Getman said.
UAB continues its opening weekend on Sunday, Aug. 27, with a trip to Memphis, Tenn. to take on the Tigers in a long-standing rivalry match. First touch is set for 5 p.m. at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
