BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men's soccer team hits the road for the first time this season when it makes a short trip to take on a familiar foe Memphis in Sunday, Aug. 27. First touch is set for 5 p.m. at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
"We've had a great rivalry with Memphis, they used to be in our league and we would play them at least once a year and often times in the conference tournament as well," head coach Mike Getman said. "Even they are no longer in Conference USA it is still a big rivalry match for us. We've had great games with them for so long so we're looking forward to the match."
UAB (0-0-1) opened the season on Friday night at BBVA Compass Field with a 0-0 double overtime tie against UNC Greensboro marking the first season opening tie for the Blazers since 2003.
A plethora of Blazers made their debut in the Green and Gold including James Teal who earned the starting nod in the net. Teal became the first UAB player that was not Joe Kuzminsky to start in goal for the first time in four years.
Memphis (0-0-1), like the Blazers, is coming off of a season opening double overtime 0-0 tie. The Tigers opened the season at Belmont on Friday night. Senior keeper Jake Leeker had a career game notching nine saves en route to the 11th shutout of his career.
The Tigers, led by midfielder Jackson Morse, were picked to finish eighth in the preseason American Athletic Conference polls. They return eight starters from a season ago.
The two teams competing are quite familiar with each other as they have met 38 times before with the series tied at 19 apiece. Meeting for the first time in 1982, UAB and Memphis have squared of every year since 1991.
UAB travels to Memphis looking for revenge as the Tigers snapped the Blazers' three game winning streak in the series last season.
Fans making the trip will receive free admission to the game as well as a chance to catch the UAB women's soccer team in action at 7:30 against Memphis.
