BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UAB volleyball split a Friday double feature in Day 2 of the Blazer Invitational.
The Blazers (2-4) won the afternoon match against Charleston Southern 3-1, (23-25, 25-12, 25-13, 25-16) and with the exception of the first set, they had complete control of the match. Haley Jared again led the way with 17 kills and 13 digs, scoring her second straight double-double.
The Bucs (0-6) couldn't stop Gabby Deshotel and Erika Zembyla who added 12 and 11 kills in the match while Emily Martinez tallied 20 digs followed by Kenley Adams and Haley Jared with 13 each. Zahria Richard led all Blazers in blocks with four.
In the final game of the night, UAB met Austin Peay (5-1) and dropped a four-set match 3-1, (20-25, 25-22, 30-32, 25-17). Once more Jared tallied a double-double with 14 kills and 14 digs. Adams recorded 42 assists and added 11 more digs.
Deshotel led the Blazers in in kills versus the Governors with 16.
"It was a mixed day for us," head coach Kerry Messersmith said. "We played well and in control in the first match and got the win. We felt good coming into the game against Austin Peay and played well through the first three sets. The third set was a marathon and then we let down in the fourth."
UAB will have tomorrow off from tournament action but will hit the court again on Sunday, Sept. 3 to close out the Blazer Invitational taking on Western Illinois.
