BIRMINGHAM – Coming off what is arguably the program's best tournament win at its first-ever MEAC event, the No. 16 UAB bowling team makes the short trip down I-65 this weekend to defend its title at the Hornet Classic hosted by Alabama State.
Last season, the Blazers left Montgomery with hardware in hand after posting a 10-1 overall record in the state capital, including back-to-back wins over Lincoln Memorial to secure the tournament title.
Junior Taylor Russell was named to the All-Tournament Team at last season's after winning the individual title by 37-pins over Justine Brookover of Lincoln Memorial.
This year's edition of the Blazers is off to a red hot start, coming off a victory at their first MEAC Tournament and is currently boasting a 24-12 overall record. The team has also finished inside the top 10 of every tournament it has competed in this fall.
Leading the way for UAB is Caitlin Cunningham, who entering the MEAC event led the team with four 200+ games and an average of 202.50. She also became UAB's first-ever Bowler of the Week entering last weekend's competition after her exceptional efforts at the Kat Klash Classic.
Cunningham will be joined in Montgomery by Russell, Rachel Strogin, Samantha Johnson, Annie Hurley, Jamie Krasnigor, Hallie Herring, Cameron Snyder, Elise London and Morgan Mullinax.
Competition begins on Friday at 8:45 a.m. with teams competing in five Baker matches, with Traditional matches following on Saturday beginning at 9:45 a.m. Sunday will feature a best of seven Baker matches in bracket play.
Joining the Blazers on the lanes at the event are host Alabama State, Alabama A&M, Florida A&M, Grambling State, Jackson State, Louisiana Tech and Southern.
