BIRMINGHAM – The UAB bowling team overcame adversity numerous times during bracket play on Sunday but got the job done in the championship match against Louisiana Tech to claim the Hornet Classic title for the second consecutive season.
Along with the team title, Caitlin Cunningham, Annie Hurley and Samantha Johnson each claimed a spot on the All-Tournament team.
UAB opened the tournament with three-straight wins against Southern (1,078-841), Grambling (993- 576) and Alabama A&M (884-737) before falling to the hosts Alabama State. The Blazers did not let the defeat bog them down, though, as they came back with a big win over Florida A&M to produce a pinfall of 4,805 and head into Traditional play in first place.
After opening Saturday with two tough losses against Jackson State and Louisiana Tech, the Blazers rallied to earn a comeback win over Southern (1,118-906) before taking down Grambling and Alabama A&M.
Entering match play in first place, the team found themselves in a three-game hole in the opening match against Louisiana Tech. However, the Blazers dug deep and battled back to win the final four games and take the match, 4-3, and seal a spot in the title match.
The team won its next match against Grambling with ease, taking it 4-0 (163-133, 179-138, 153-102, 178-122) to claim a spot in the title match.
The finals featured a rematch of the match-play opener and nearly started the same with the Lady Techsters taking the first two games. The Blazers responded with three-straight wins (186-137, 203-172, 204-170) and looked to have the title locked up.
Louisiana Tech had other plans, though, taking Games 5 and 6 to force a decisive seventh game. The final came down to the wire, but the lineup of Rachel Strogin, Jamie Krasnigor, Taylor Russell, Johnson and Cunningham got the job done and narrowly defeated Louisiana Tech, 190-187, to claim its second consecutive Hornet Classic crown.
UAB has now completed the fall portion of its schedule and boasts a 34-15 through four tournaments. The Blazers return to the lanes on January 11 when they travel to Jonesboro, Arkansas, to compete in the Mid-Winter Invitational hosted by Arkansas State.
