BIRMINGHAM – Coming off a repeat performance as Hornet Classic Champions to cap the fall season, the No. 20 UAB bowling team kicks off 2019 with a trip to Jonesboro, Ark., competing in the Mid-Winter Invitational hosted by Arkansas State.
Last season, the Blazers finished the tournament in eighth place among other top-ranked opponents, led by junior Taylor Russell's third place individual performance.
This year's nationally ranked edition of the Blazers sits in first place in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and boasts a 34-15 record overall and has finished inside the top 10 at every fall tournament.
UAB will matchup against several top-ranked opponents this weekend, including No. 2 Nebraska, No. 3 Vanderbilt, No. 6 Tulane, No. 10 Stephen F. Austin, No. 15 Lincoln and No. 22 Maryville.
"We are excited to return to the Mid-Winter Invitational," head coach Michelle Crews said. "It is one of our favorite tournaments of the year and it always provides a good measuring stick. This will be one of the strongest fields we will compete against and we are looking forward to getting 2019 started with a bang."
Leading the way for UAB is Caitlin Cunningham who has tallied seven 200+ performances with a collective pin-fall of 3,958 on the season for an average of 197.90.
Looking for another strong finish in Jonesboro is Russell who also leads the team bowling six 200+ games with a total pin-fall of 3,486 and an average of 183.47 across her 19 match appearances.
The two will be joined on the trip by Rachel Strogin, Samantha Johnson, Annie Hurley, Jamie Krasnigor, Elise London and Rachel Berg.
