BRMINGHAM – Running in its first meet of the 2018-19 season, the UAB track and field team had eight athletes set nine PRs, including one school record at the Birmingham Southern Ice Breaker on Friday at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Zieandrea Bridges broke the UAB school record in the weight throw with a distance of 14.86 meters, finishing third in the event. Her previous best in the weight throw was 13.24 meters which she set at the Blazer Invitational on Jan. 13, 2017. Bridges returned after missing last season due to injury and competed in the shot put as well, throwing a distance of 12.64 meters.
Emily Drouin returned to the indoor track after redshirting last year and set a new personal best in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 9:52.42. She beat her previous career best by seven seconds en route to winning the event on Friday.

"Our girls came out and competed well today," Thomas said. "It was the first college meet for a lot of our freshman so there were lots of butterflies in their stomachs. However, we saw lots of good things today. We had plenty of PRs, a school record from Zieandrea and an event win from Emily. We learned a lot about what we need to work on going forward and I'm proud of the way they competed. This was just our first meet of the season and we'll get back out to practice keep getting better."
