UAB Falls to No. 10 LSU; Defeats Jacksonville State

BATON ROUGE, La. – The UAB beach volleyball team opened the LSU Beach Invitational with a split on Friday afternoon as the Blazers lost to the host Tigers 5-0 and returned to defeat Jacksonville State 5-0 in their second match at Mango's Beach Club.
The Blazers opened the tournament with a 5-0 loss to the tenth-ranked Tigers. LSU won each match in straight sets, while the two most competitive matches came on courts two and three.
On court two, Avei Logoleo and Haley Jared fell two points short in each set, dropping the first 22-20 and the second 21-19. Court three was also closely contested as Erin Bognar and Emily Martinez ultimately fell short 21-19, 21-18.
UAB then returned the favor as they blanked the JSU Gamecocks and improved to 4-0 all-time against its in-state foe. Four of the five courts were decided in straight sets, while court four ended in a forfeit in favor of UAB has JSU had to withdraw in the second due to injury.
"We didn't come out and play the way we are capable of against LSU and we need to be more consistent if we are going to compete with the nation's best week-in and week-out," said head coach Kyra Iannone. "We responded against Jacksonville State and we need to finish the tournament strong tomorrow against two talented teams."
The Blazers return to action on Saturday with matches against opponents they have never played before in Texas A&M Kingsville (11 a.m.) and Texas A&M Corpus Christi (2 p.m.).
