FORT WORTH, Texas – Opening the season on the road in the Cowtown Classic, the UAB volleyball team dropped its first match of the year 3-0 to TCU on Friday afternoon.
Emily Rudolph and Alex Kells both had solid opening sets for the Blazers tallying four and three kills respectively. Setter Shelby Holderfield notched nine assists while Emma Mitchell came away with four digs. It wasn't enough however, as UAB fell 25-19 in the first set.
UAB (0-1) forced 11 TCU errors in the second set while Rudolph and Kells again led the Green and Gold in kills with two each. The second was the tightest set of the day with each team exchanging the lead six times with nine tied scores.
The Blazers held the lead in the second 22-20, but a late rally by the Horned Frogs gave them the second set win 25-23.
Down 12-6 in the third set, UAB showed its toughness as it rallied back and eventually tied the set at 16-16. The set was close the rest of the way with the Blazers putting pressure on TCU. UAB continued to battle as TCU looked for match point, forcing a TCU error before getting a big kill from Victoria Young, cutting the score to 24-22.
TCU (1-0) took the third set however, 25-22.
"I am really proud of how our team competed today," head coach Amy Pauly said. "Regardless of what the score was they were giving 100 percent the whole time. Our goal is to be playing our best volleyball in November so it is great to see the things we did well and to know the areas where we need to improve."
Playing in her first ever match for UAB, Kells scored eight kills and finished with a .400 hitting percentage. Rudolph and Mitchell both finished the match with six kills while freshman Brianna Muller coming up with a team leading nine digs in her collegiate debut.
