The drive was UAB's longest scoring drive of the season in plays, yards and time of possession. The defense followed it up with a crucial takeaway with two minutes to go and a sack as time expired to secure the victory.
UAB is now 8-0 at home since its return to the playing field which has tied a school record for consecutive home wins.
UAB (2-1) used a stout defensive effort to shutdown the Tulane offense, holding the Green Wave to just 7-of-24 passing for 180 yards. Kristopher Moll had stellar day as he forced a fumble which resulted in a 48-yard touchdown return by Garrett Marino, while Moll also added his first career interception, a sack and a TFL.
The defense led the charge all day, racking up six sacks and 10 TFLs while forcing three Tulane turnovers.
Spencer Brown rushed for 101 yards and a touchdown to notch his eighth career 100-yard rushing performance. The Blazers, who lead Conference USA in rushing, compiled 269 rushing yards and has had no less than that number in all three of their games.
The UAB offense came out firing as it marched down the field on its opening drive, going 65 yards on nine plays. Quarterback A.J. Erdely capped off the drive with a nine-yard touchdown run to give UAB an early 7-0 lead.
In the second quarter, UAB had a 13-play drive that went 59-yards and chewed up over five minutes off the clock. Brown finished the drive with a two-yard touchdown run to put the Blazers up 14-0.
Tulane (1-2) answered back with an 8-play, 75-yard scoring drive that ended in a three-yard rushing touchdown by Darius Bradwell, cutting the UAB lead to 14-7.
Two drives later, Tulane had the ball on its own 48-yard line and went for it on fourth down. Tulane quarterback Jonathan Banks rolled out of the pocket where he was met by Moll, forcing a fumble and resulting in Marino's 48-yard score to give UAB a 21-7 lead at the half.
The Green Wave scored on their first drive of the second half to cut into the Blazer lead, off a 44-yard touchdown strike from Banks to Darnell Mooney to make the score 21-14. UAB answered back on the next drive with a 37-yard field goal from Nick Vogel, extending the lead to 24-14.
Tulane drove 75 yards in six plays on the ensuing drive where Banks again found Mooney for six points, this time a 24-yard touchdown pass to make it a three-point game, 24-21.
The Green Wave tied the game at 24-24 with a 40-yard field goal and 10:01 remaining on the clock, but that's when UAB took control of the quarter.
Beginning at its own seven-yard line, UAB marched down the field on the legs of Lucious Stanley and Spencer Brown. Stanley and Brown each rolled up 21 yards on the drive while Erdely rushed for 15 yards, including a big 13-yard run before finding Scott in the end zone for six, giving the Blazers a 31-24 lead. Twelve of the 13 plays on the drive were rushes.
With the win, UAB evened the all-time series with its former C-USA rival 5-5. The Blazers outgained the Green Wave 449-355 in total offense.
The Blazers return home on Sept. 29 to open conference play against Charlotte. A start time for the game will be announced on Monday, Sept. 17.
