UAB Drops Match to FAU on the Road 3-0

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Playing its second conference match of the season, the UAB volleyball team fell to Florida Atlantic, 3-0 (17-25, 21-25, 23-25), Sunday at FAU Arena.
Emma Mitchell led the Blazers in kills with 10 and picked up her fifth double-double of the season by adding 12 digs. Shelby Holderfield had 30 assists in the match, set a new career high in kills with five and added seven digs against the Owls.
Victoria Young however, led the charge for the Blazers as she recorded nine kills, hit at a .467 clip and picked up four blocks on the day.
"I thought Vic was a good example of putting words into actions," head coach Amy Pauly said. "She took ownership in being a leader both vocally and offensively and it showed today in her numbers."
Abby Carlile and Emily Rudolph each chipped in with seven kills and two blocks. As a team, the Blazers hit .256 for the match.
UAB (8-8, 0-2 C-USA) dropped the opening set 17-25 as FAU used multiple scoring runs to edge away and keep the Green and Gold off balance. The Owls has a 6-2 run early in the set to take a 9-5 lead and then went on a 4-0 run later, giving them a 17-10 edge. UAB cut it to five, 15-20, but FAU closed the first set on a 5-2 run, taking the first set.
Florida Atlantic (10-3, 1-0) didn't have an easy time the rest of the match as UAB fought and clawed for every point. Despite falling behind in the second 0-3, the Blazers fought back and kept the set close, tying the score five separate times. With the score tied at 19-19, FAU managed to close the second set on a 6-2 scoring run and took a 2-0 lead in the match with the 25-21 second set win.
The third set was just as tight with the Blazers and Owls swapping the lead five times. The scoring runs continued with FAU taking an early 3-0 lead only for UAB to come back with a 6-2 run and take the lead 6-5.
UAB edged out to a 17-14 lead and looked to take command, but FAU raced back with a 6-2 run, grabbing a 20-19 lead. UAB tied it up at 20-20 on the next point but the Owls closed out the set on a 5-3 run to win 25-23 and take the match 3-0.
"We learned a huge lesson this weekend and that is how to hold each other accountable," Pauly said. "Our team is learning how to be stable and confident in long rallies and tight sets."
