UAB Welcomes Marshall For Home Opener

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB volleyball team will host its first home match of the season on Friday, Sept. 28. at 7 p.m. as the Blazers welcome Marshall to Bartow Arena.
UAB (8-8, 0-2 C-USA) opened the season with 16 straight road matches and head coach Amy Pauly is looking forward to being able to play in the friendly confines of Bartow Arena.
"We're excited to be at home for the first time this season," Pauly said. "The girls are looking forward to playing in front of the home fans. Marshall brings in a good squad and we need to be sound defensively and stay in rotation. I'm looking forward to a great match."
Marshall comes to Birmingham with a 7-9 overall record and an 0-2 mark in Conference USA play. UAB leads the all-time series over the Thundering Herd 12-11.
Entering the match, UAB ranks in the top five in the league in assists per set (12.00), aces per set (1.44) and blocks per set (2.19).
Senior Emily Martinez and sophomore Shelby Holderfield are among the top performers for the Blazers. Martinez leads the team with 153 digs for an average of 3.06 per set. Holderfield averages 10.39 assists per set, with 561 for the season.
On the offensive end, Abby Carlile, Emma Mitchell and Victoria Young lead the charge for UAB. Carlile has 160 kills to her name with a .270 hitting percentage. Meanwhile Mitchell has 122 kills, nine service aces and 110 digs. Young has scored 103 kills, 12 service aces and leads the team in blocks with 54.
