BIRMINGHAM- UAB used four unanswered second half goals to defeat Gardner-Webb by a score of 4-3 Saturday night at BBVA Field.
The Blazers got off to a rough start on the night allowing three goals in the first half including two own goals.
Gardner-Webb (6-7-1) got on the board in the fifth minute of play via an own goal as the ball deflected off a sliding UAB defender in front of the net.
In the 29th minute the Runnin' Bulldogs would increase their lead to two after a perfectly placed pass from midfield found Abel Gebrekiros who finished it into the bottom right corner of the net.
Gardner-Webb would go up at halftime 3-0 after Julian Mehl mishandled a lob resulting in a second own goal.
UAB (3-9-1) came alive in the second half starting in the 56th minute when Brandon Core tallied his first collegiate goal off a cross from Krenar Krasniqi from the far side of the field.
Seven minutes later in the 63rd minute UAB would cut the Gardner-Webb lead to one when Aodhán O'Hara scored his first goal of the season capitalizing on a misplay by a Gardner-Webb defender.
The Blazers would find the equalizer off the head off Jake Futrell in the 73rd minute. Joseph Buete sent a perfectly placed cross in front of the net and Futrell finished with the diving header for his first goal of the season.
O'Hara provided the game winner in the 77th minute of play, his second goal of the night. Brooks Rice found O'Hara open in front of the net and the junior buried.
UAB outshot Gardner-Webb 13-10 on the night. Eight of the Blazers 13 shots coming in the second half.
"Tonight, we had one of the worst halves of soccer we have put together this season," said head coach Jeff Kinney. "Then we followed it up with one of our best halves of the season. It was not a personnel or formation change, but a level of pride the boys showed that made the difference. It would have been easy to pack up and call it a night down 0-3, but these boys deserve a lot of credit for fighting through adversity and figuring out what it takes to win games."
The Blazers return to BBVA Field Tuesday night to take on Lipscomb at 7 p.m.
