Blazers Fall in 2019 Season Finale at No. 19 WKU

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB volleyball team was unable to avoid a sweep in its final match of the 2019 season, dropping on the road to No. 19 WKU Saturday afternoon. The Blazers started off going toe-to-toe with the 2019 Conference USA regular season champion Lady Toppers, evening the score at 17 all deep into the first set, but UAB didn't manage to keep the pace throughout the match.
How It Happened
The Blazers (12-15, 4-10 C-USA) were able to outduel the Lady Toppers (28-1, 14-0 C-USA) in one category, aces. UAB picked up seven points from the baseline to WKU's six with redshirt freshman Alex Kells posting a career-high tying four on the day to lead the team.
The first set was tight mostly throughout as UAB used a five-point run to take a 9-7 lead. The Blazers kept the pressure on up to a 15-14 lead. After evening the score at 17 all, the Lady Toppers began to take control. WKU inched ahead 21-19, then went on a four-point run to close out the set on top, 25-19.
The Lady Toppers got hot in the second set, taking 13 of 15 points to jump ahead, 17-6. UAB would fight near the end with runs of four and three points, but WKU took set two, 35-17.
The third set was close early as WKU climbed up to a 10-8 lead. Both sides traded a pair of short bursts, but the Lady Toppers created the separation they needed, going up 16-11. Although UAB continued to fight back, WKU took four of the last five points to win the set, 25-18, and earn the match sweep.

Redshirt junior outside hitter Emma Mitchell nearly eclipsed 300 kills on the season, finishing with 293 (3.04 k/s). True freshman setter Rachel Morse orchestrated the UAB offense, totaling 838 assists (8.88 a/s) through the year to place sixth in the conference. Another true freshman in Kiana Mack was a sniper for the Blazers, dropping 30 aces this season to rank sixth in Conference USA as well. Sophomore Brianna Muller was UAB's most effective libero, compiling 274 digs (2.85 d/s) on the year. Sophomore middle blocker Anna D'Cruz was the Blazers' anchor in the middle, stuffing opposing teams for 90 total blocks (0.95 b/s) in 2019.
UAB returns 14 of its current 16 players next season, including all regular starters and rotational players along with three recent signees to date.
