BIRMINGHAM - The UAB women's tennis team received a singles victory on court two from Alexandra Shchipakina, but ultimately fell in its home opener 6-1 to South Alabama on Saturday afternoon at George Ward Park.
Shchipakina defeated her opponent Yurie Takanishi in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 to even her overall singles record to 3-3 for the season, but that would be the only victory for the Blazers on the afternoon.
The match started with South Alabama winning the doubles points as the Jags took courts two and three for the 1-0 advantage. With the double point already decided, Shchipakina and teammate Marlene Herrmann left their match unfinished on court one.
South Alabama took a 3-0 advantage by winning in singles on courts six and four in straight sets, but Shchipakina got the Blazers on the board with her victory in second singles.
The Jags though, clinched the match as Herrmann fell to Alexandria Stiteler 6-4, 6-3 on court one.
USA also took court five in straight sets, and then final match of the day was a three-set victory for South as Yu Fujioka outlasted UAB's Sophie Dodds 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 on court three.
It is a quick turnaround for the Blazers as they travel to Starkville, Miss., tomorrow for a match at Mississippi State. First serve is set for 12 p.m. and fans can watch and follow live stats by clicking here.
