BIRMINGHAM - The UAB track and field team wrapped up another successful weekend of competition as it completed play at the Raleigh Relays and the Florida Relays.
Ebony Tolliver opened the Florida Relays by setting a personal record in the 400 meters, running a 56.77. Marielle Lewis placed 12th in the 400 meter hurdles open section, finishing with a time of 1:02.71.
"Ebony ran a huge PR by a second and looked strong doing it. Marielle ran a good race and closed well, but we need to clean up some of her steps in the middle of the race. She's in a good place."
Tolliver, Lewis, Alyssa Nelson and Louise Wieland recorded a seasonal-best in the 4x400 meters with a 3:48.84, UAB's fastest time in the event since 2017 and a top-five time in Conference USA.
"The team ran very well," Thomas said. "That's much closer to what we're capable of than what we've run during indoor and so far outdoor."
Tolliver, Wieland, Joy Frierson and Ameilie Dierke finished 11th overall in the 4x200 meter relay en route to finishing with the second-fastest time in school history (1:36.53). The sprint medley (Kyla Horn, Jabriana Jemison saw UAB record a top-10 finish, win the heat and beat the fastest time by a Blazer foursome in a decade.
The 4x100 meter relay team of Frierson, Tolliver, Wieland and Dierke notched a seasonal best and a top-five Conference USA time in Gainesville as well.
"The girls had a great weekend in Florida," Thomas said. "There are the best teams in the country, professionals and olympians, and we held our own. We ran fast in all our events and on the relays. The 4x200 was a highlight as we were the second-fastest in UAB history. The 4x100 ran well and we know where we can get better. The sprint medley ran great and was a top-10 finish at the meet. All around, the sprinters did their jobs and we had fun doing it. I can't ask for more."
The Blazers team in Raleigh performed at an extremely high level also, with Emily Drouin breaking the school record and a personal record in the steeplechase with a 10:22.88. Drouin's mark earned her a top-five finish put her in place for a spot in the NCAAs.
The 4x1500 meter relay team of Celestial Moon, Serena Martinez, Laura Thompson and Britney Johnson recorded a top-five finish with a 19:39.10, while Shauntia Landrum placed just outside the top-10 in the triple jump with an 11.70.
"It was exciting hearing how the crew at Raleigh Relays did. Emily breaking the school record and punching her ticket to the NCAAs was awesome. The team is in a good place. We have to be smart and keep working toward our goals."
