FORT WORTH, Texas - Highlighted by three school records, the UAB beach volleyball team had a historic Friday in Fort Worth at the TCU Invitational to conclude the regular season.
In UAB's second match of the day, Tressa Buckland became the winningest player in program history by picking up her 51st career victory. Buckland and teammate Jaelyn Keene defeated No. 18 TCU's top pair of Mandi Orellana and Haven Hill in straight sets, 21-14, 21-16, for Buckland's historic victory.
Buckland surpassed former record holder Sara Rishell who notched 50 career wins from 2013-16.
"I am so proud of Tressa and she deserves this award," head coach Kyra Iannone said. "She's a senior playing at the ones. She is a captain and is the heart and soul of this team."
In the process, Buckland and Keene picked up their 18th and 19th wins of the year, which is a new single-season record for Blazer beach volleyball. Buckland and Keene are now 13-4 overall together as partners and are on pace to have the best single season winning percentage in school history.
UAB's final match of the day was a 4-1 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi which gave the Blazers a program-best 14th win of the season. UAB (14-14) has now established its best season in school history and looks to make noise at next weekend's CCSA Tournament in Emerson, Ga.
"We put forth the toughest schedule UAB has ever played to set the standard for the future of this program," Iannone said. "We tried to play as many top 20 teams as possible, and the fact that we hit this historic milestone means so much to us. We have worked hard and the wins are starting to come."
Along the way this year, UAB set a program-record with three CCSA regular season victories and its second win over a nationally ranked opponent with a victory against No. 18 Georgia State earlier this season.
The Blazers were 1-2 overall on Friday in Fort Worth. Along with the win against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, UAB fell to No. 3 Florida State 5-0 and No. 18 TCU 4-1.
UAB now awaits the bracket for the CCSA Tournament. The 12-team league will vie for conference supremacy next week, April 19-21, at Rally Volleyball located just outside of Atlanta.
