BIRMINGHAM - The UAB beach volleyball team is set to participate in the third annual CCSA Tournament this weekend, April 19-21, at Rally Volleyball in Emerson, Ga.
The Blazers (14-14) are in the midst of their best season in program history and look to make a run at the conference title this weekend. UAB has been slotted into Pool III and will open play on Friday with No. 9 FIU at 10:30 a.m. and No. 17 Florida Atlantic at 1:30 p.m.
With this year being the first of a 12-team league, there is a new format for the tournament which features four pools of three. After Friday's pool play, the top team from each of the four groups receive a bye into the quarterfinals and the remaining eight teams are re-seeded for the start of elimination play.
The Blazers and the Panthers will be meeting for the first time this season, while UAB looks for a measure of revenge when they take on the Owls after suffering a loss at FAU earlier in the year.
UAB will be led into the tournament by its top duo of Jaelyn Keene and Tressa Buckland who have exceled on Court 1 together. Since partnering together on March 10, the tandem is 13-4 as a pair, and they are both 19-9 overall. The 19 wins have established a new program record and they look to become the first players ever at UAB to win 20 games this weekend.
The middle of the lineup has also had a strong showing as Jayme Bratsberg and Annie Pringle have picked up 15 wins this season, along with Kenley Adams and SalliAnne Napolitano each winning 14. The back of the lineup has been anchored by a pair of freshmen in Jenna Gathright and Emma Andraka who have put together a very solid rookie campaign. The duo is 12-12 together on court five.
Along with Keene and Buckland establishing the new single season wins record, the Blazers have won a program-best 14 games, and Buckland became the school's leader in career victories last weekend at TCU. Buckland enters the CCSA Tournament with 52 career victories.
The semifinals and final of the CCSA Tournament will be broadcast live on ESPN+. For updates in pool play and elimination rounds, follow @UAB_BVB on Twitter and Instagram, and visit the CCSA Website.
