Shirley’s Overtime Penalty Kick Gives UAB First Win of the Year

BIRMINGHAM- Chandler Shirley's penalty kick in overtime gave UAB its first win of the Jeff Kinney era Sunday against Milwaukee.
Milwaukee got on the board quickly scoring in the 3rdminute. Freshman Matthew Cahill got open on a breakaway and put the ball in the back of the net for the Panthers only goal of the match. UAB would go into halftime down a score despite outshooting Milwaukee 11-5.
The Blazers found the equalizer in the 52ndminute when Blake White danced around defenders and sent one past the goalkeeper. The goal was White's third of the weekend and season.
UAB would continue to put pressure on the Panthers earning five corner kicks and outshooting Milwaukee 6-3 in the second half. Neither team could find the back of the net again ending regulation knotted up 1-1 to send the match into overtime.
Four minutes into the overtime period White sent a long cross over the heads of the Milwaukee defenders to Shirley. Shirley's first touch brought the goalkeeper out of the goal causing him to trip Shirley. Shirley calmly sent the ensuing penalty kick right down the middle past the diving keeper to win the game for the Blazers.
"It feels good to get our first win of the season," commented Kinney. "The key for us is to continue the learning process and learn from the mistakes we made today. Overall I am proud of the team and the depth they showed playing so many players off the bench."
UAB will go on the road next weekend to kick off Conference USA play at Old Dominion Saturday, Sept. 14 at 6 p.m.
