UAB Softball Defeats ULM 7-0; Falls to McNeese State 4-3

CONROE, Texas – The UAB softball team blanked ULM 7-0 and fell to McNeese State 4-3 on the second day of action at the Scrap Yard College Softball Classic on Saturday.
Behind a one-hit shutout by freshman Jaycee Cook, the Blazers (7-3) cruised past ULM (3-5) in their first game of the day. UAB compiled 15 hits en route to the 7-0 victory. In game two, UAB battled back from a 4-0 deficit, but ultimately fell short in a one-run defeat to McNeese (7-1).
UAB 7, ULM 0
True freshman Jaycee Cook threw a complete game one-hit shutout in leading the Blazers to a 7-0 victory over ULM.
Cook improved her record to 2-0 with the win and struck out six batters in the victory. She now owns a 2.69 ERA for the season.
After leaving runners on third base in both the first and second innings, the Blazers broke through with three runs in the third.
Sierra Fraizer opened the scoring with a two-RBI double which scored Gabi Apaig and KK Crocker. Two batters later, Jenna Olszewski plated Frazier with an RBI double of her own.
Crocker then tacked on a run in the fourth inning with an inside the park homer to right field as ULM was unable to make a diving catch, allowing Crocker to come all the way around for a 4-0 lead.
With the bases loaded in the sixth inning, Faith Hegh roped a grounder to short which ULM's Jacelyn Buck was unable to handle, allowing Natalie Erwin and Apaig to score, bringing the score to 6-0 in favor of UAB.
UAB would tack on one more run in the seventh inning on back-to-back doubles from Analyse Petree and Olszewski.
McNEESE STATE 4, UAB 3
UAB battled back from four runs down, but ultimately lost its third one-run game of the season with a 4-3 defeat to McNeese State.
McNeese scored one run in the top of the first and three in the top of the second to take an early 4-0 advantage, but UAB responded with three runs in the third.
With one out, Natalie Erwin doubled and reached third on a passed ball. After a Gabi Apaig walk, KK Crocker scored Erwin on an RBI fielder's choice. Faith Hegh and Dylinn Stancil then both reached safely, setting the stage for Sierra Frazier with the bases loaded. Frazier took a full count down the left field line which plated Crocker and Hegh, making the score 4-3.
It was a pitcher's duel from the fourth inning on. Sarah Cespedes was lights out in a relief effort, pitching 5.2 innings and allowing no runs on two hits.
The Blazers out-hit the Cowgirls 7-5 but were unable to cross the plate after the third inning and stranded eight runners on base.
