UAB set for Scrap Yard College Softball Classic in Houston

HOUSTON – The UAB softball team will play five games this weekend, Feb. 14-16, at the Scrap Yard College Softball Classic in Houston beginning Friday morning at the Scrap Yard Sports Complex.
While in Houston, the Blazers (5-1) face South Dakota State (2-2) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (0-4) on Friday, ULM (2-2) and McNeese State (4-1) on Saturday, and an additional contest versus McNeese State on Sunday.
UAB picked up a 9-2 midweek victory at Southeastern Louisiana on Wednesday. The Blazers compiled a season-high 16 hits in the contest and matched a season-best with nine runs scored.
The Blazer offense has been firing on all cylinders in the early going. UAB scored 39 runs and has 61 hits through six games for an average of 6.5 runs and 10.2 hits per game.
Third baseman Dylinn Stancil was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate against SLU and has increased her batting average to an impressive .524. She has the second highest batting average on the team behind Sierra Frazier who is hitting at a .526 clip and has an team-high .640 on base percentage.
Blazer pitching continues to be a strength as the team boasts a collective 2.69 ERA. Sarah Cespedes picked up the win at SLU for her first of the season. She, Emily Kachel and Amy Woodham have combined to pitch 40 innings and all have under a 2.50 ERA.
SCOUTING THE FIELD:
Besides UAB, McNeese State comes into the tournament with the best record and split two games with preseason C-USA favorite North Texas. The Cowgirls have a game at Texas A&M on Thursday night before heading to the Scrap Yard.
South Dakota State opened last weekend with wins against Murray State and Northern Iowa, and losses to DePaul and Drake.
ULM defeated Southern twice and lost to Stephen F. Austin twice to open the season, while TAMUCC lost all four games in a tournament hosted by Texas.
