CONROE, Texas – The UAB softball team defeated South Dakota State 6-0 and fell to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 2-1 in extra innings during the first day of action at the Scrap Yard College Softball Classic on Friday.
"We came out in the first game and got an outstanding performance by Amy in the circle," head coach Jimmy Kolaitis said. "It's always good when you can get a complete game from your starting pitcher. In game two, we just got out-competed by our opponent. For us to be a championship level club we need to be able to perform at a championship level every time we step onto the field. We did not do that today. The good thing is we have a chance to recover tomorrow."
The Blazers are now 6-2 overall and face ULM and McNeese State on Saturday.
UAB 6, SOUTH DAKOTA STATE 0
Junior Amy Woodham pitched a complete game shutout with six strikeouts to lead the Blazers to a 6-0 victory over South Dakota State.
Woodham (2-1) picked up her second win of the season and now owns a razor thin 0.91 ERA. In 23 innings of work, she has only allowed three runs and has struck out 19 batters.
Sophomore Faith Hegh hit her first career home run in the bottom of the first inning which proved to be the game-winning run.
The Blazers hung five runs on the Jackrabbits in the fifth inning to blow the game wide open. Sierra Frazier opened the frame with a triple, and was then plated on an RBI from Analyse Petree. The following batter was Jenna Olszewski who roped a double to score Petree, and two batters later Olszewski scored on an RBI single by Ashton Clem.
The final two runs of the inning came on a bases loaded double to right field by Dylinn Stancil, bringing the final tally to 6-0 in favor of UAB.
TEXAS A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI 2, UAB 1 (8 INNINGS)
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi scored a run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to force extras, and plated the game winning run in the eighth to hand UAB its second loss of the season.
Freshman Jaycee Cook pitched 4.1 scoreless innings for UAB, and was replaced by Sarah Cespedes who kept the game scoreless until the Islanders rallied in the seventh.
UAB broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning when Jenna Olszewski scored Sierra Frazier on an RBI double down the left field line. Frazier roped a one out single and then stole second, which moved her into scoring position for Olszewski's RBI.
The game remained 1-0 in favor of UAB until the bottom of the seventh inning as the Islanders tied the game with a two-out RBI single, sending UAB into its first extra inning game of the season.
UAB stranded two runners in the top of the eighth inning, which gave A&M a chance to win it in the bottom. The Islanders opened the inning with a single and advanced to second on an error.
