Blazers Edge out UTEP in Five Sets

BIRMINGHAM — The UAB volleyball team won their third straight conference match in a 3-2 victory over UTEP Sunday afternoon at Bartow Arena.
"Getting that gritty win in spite of not feeling or playing our best was good for our team," head coach Betsy Freeburg said. "UTEP played great defense and they really challenged us and made us earn our points."
As a team, UAB (4-2, 3-0 CUSA) lead UTEP (2-3, 0-1 CUSA) in kills, assists, digs and attack percentage. The Miners held the advantage in service aces and blocks.
Individually, Fernanda Maida had a career-high 22 kills in the match on a .214 hitting percentage. Freshman Caroline Stogner also had a career day with 13 kills.
UAB jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first set. The Miners brought the set within four in off a few errors by the Blazers. After trading points late, UAB earned the 25-19 win to take the first set.
The Blazers started the second set with a four-point run to go up 5-1 early. UTEP responded with a three-point and four-point run to go up 10-8. The set was another back-and-forth battle, but the Miners claimed the 25-21 set win to tie the match at 1-1.
In the third set, UTEP had a 4-1 advantage, but UAB came back to tie the match at 13. After being tied eight times, the Blazers took two of the last three points to win the set, 25-23.
During the fourth set, the Miners edged out the Blazers 25-19. UTEP ended the set on a five-point run.
As the match came down to the fifth set, UAB and UTEP kept it close. The set was tied at 11 and the Blazers took five of the last seven points for the 15-13 set and 3-2 match wins.
"We are looking forward to regrouping and the opportunity to play clean, Blazer volleyball tomorrow," Freeburg added.
The Blazers will be back in action tomorrow morning against UTEP. The match begins at 11 a.m. and will be broadcasted on CUSA.TV.
