Blazers Host UTEP on Sunday and Monday

BIRMINGHAM — The UAB volleyball team looks to continue their three-match win streak when they host UTEP Sunday and Monday at Bartow Arena.

The first meeting between the Blazers and the Miners was in 2003, in a 3-2 UTEP win in Flagstaff, Ariz. Since UTEP joined Conference USA in 2005, UAB has gone 13-5, including the last three meetings.

SCOUTING THE MINERS

The last match for UTEP came on Oct. 3 against North Texas and Stephen F. Austin. The Miners split the day with a 3-2 win over the Mean Green and a 3-1 loss against the Jacks.
Senior outside hitter Cheyenne Jones was selected to the Preseason All-Conference USA Team.
Alianza Darley leads the team with 62 kills. Junior setter Kristen Fritsche has 82 assists on the season.

THE LAST TIME OUT

UAB had a series sweep against North Texas going 3-2 and 3-0 over the two days. The first meeting marked the first win in Denton, Texas for the Blazers and the first against the Mean Green since 2013.
In the two matches, Fernanda Maida has 31 kills with a .259 hitting percentage.
The Blazers held North Texas to a .170 hitting percentage in the second meeting.
The 2-0 start to conference play is the best opening for the Blazers since 2017.

SERVING IT UP

In the two matches against North Texas the Blazers served up 23 aces.
Junior defensive specialist Brianna Muller had seven aces, including six in the first set on Feb. 8. The six aces sets a school record for most in a set.
Lidya Canturk also served up four aces in the match on Feb. 7.

STATS RANKINGS

Muller ranks No. 26 in the nation and No. 1 in the conference in aces per set (0.67).
Maida has three top-three rankings in Conference USA in attacks per set (11.71, 2nd) and kills per set (4.41, 3rd) and points per set (4.85, 3rd).
